I watched and interesting Facebook reel of a Muslim (at some kind of information hand-out desk on the street or on a campus) talking to a man and challenging him on whether God can die. No, of course not. The Muslim then asks "did Jesus die?". Of course, the difficulty then is, if Jesus died and God cannot die, then Jesus must not be God.
The person whose video this was then gave some good, logical analysis of how you could respond. Unfortunately, the Christian in the video was quite flummoxed (as I would probably be!) by the line of questioning and the logical challenge.
The Muslim man was using the word "die" in two different ways. If you mean "cease to exist" then of course God cannot die because he is an eternal, spiritual being. "Die" can also mean the perishing of a physical body. If you mean this, and you know that God is a spiritual being, then God can also not die in that sense. If, however, you understand the concept of the hypostatic union that is Jesus being both fully man and fully God, then you can see that Jesus could die while also being God. He took on physical form, so he can die in this sense, without ceasing to be God. So, yes, in this sense, Jesus can be God and God can die.
Only by taking on human form, while remaining fully God, can this be true for Jesus.
