1 Peter 2:910 (ESV): But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are Gods people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
- Comfort for his readers, going through suffering
- They have an identity
- Humans have a deep desire to belong. We go to great lenths, even gang membership tied to desire to have a family, a group to call their own.
- Readers we're not fitting in to the Roman culture--persecution was there or coming
- Yet they belonged to a world wide, shared identity--the body of Christ
- No ordinary, ho hum club, but royal, preistly and with a mission: to proclaim His excellencies
- We have common fellowship the world over, no matter where we go.
- Common experiences, common faith
- I can see why it was comforting to these suffering believers: they were not alone, but part of a special group: the people of God
- We are too, comforted, invigorated, with a purpose and mission and much to do
- A great gift got Gods through salvation

| Courtney Spragg | Don't know how she'd feel, having had miscarriages and no kids of her own. Can talk to Tina to get some insight, possibly |
| Mom and Dad Ramey | Already doing Fridays with the boys, might be interested in altering the Friday schedule to take David in addition to other boys for a date night |
| Sara and Anthony | Always nice about it and wanting to, but having a baby soon and probably shouldn't count on them being available |

1. Kids never alone with Jon and JuliZ
2. Kids not to sit under teaching from either, especially if we cannot be present (think kid's Sunday school at RVCF or camp teaching)
3. We're OK with him leading singing (if we are present) because we see the potential damage of his exaggeration as minimal
4. No "limits" or requests for Joel and Annette when they visit to "not talk to Jon while you're here" or "don't talk about the situation". We want to bear their burdens as best we can. We think we should control how we engage in any conversations to encourage, listen, respond, but not try to "figure it out" or offer advice. In other words, try to limit our emotional involvement.
5. We'll answer any calls or texts from Jon or Juli but not engage on anything related to their marriage--directly letting them know that if needed. But, we want to be available to help where it's possible with practical things we know can benefit.

Bible school
- Thinking about the future, the next generation of teachers
- Looking for knowledge of the word, good character, proximity to the school
Other work
- Bible map translation
- Emmaus course translation, 16 when they arrived, 39 now, 9 more in production. Obstacle in printing: only printing machine broke, long time to get part and fixed, now have two printing machines
- Need people who can run machines, need space to lay out pages, need team to put books together, main challenge is electricity availability, on 2 hours a day sometimes, have generator, but fuel shortages
- Pray for ability to print courses
Work
- Working with others to overcome barriers in a godly way, not resorting to culturally acceptable things that are ungodly
- Walk rightly, be example
- Do things gods way, not mans way
- Challenge for Burundian me who also see these practices as wrong, but face the challenges of speaking against their countrymen and breaking strong interdependent ties

It was nice when people…
- Gave us gift cards so getting and paying for food wasnt an issue
- Making us meals, Grace still had to recover from delivery
- Gave to us financially for the funeral
- For closer friends: just asking us what we needed, having us over
- Close parents: dad helped me with funeral arrangements
- Close parents: graces parents came and just helped us day to day
- Other moms: Becca and Jackie invited grace to Powell gardens, seeing beautiful things after something awful happened
- Kelly Douglas called grace and asked her what happened and asked her questions like whether she was getting outside and eating, etc that helped grace do some practical things that were good
Good things we did…
- Reading scripture at every meal, when we woke up and went to sleep
- Even though it felt strange, getting back to normal things like yard work
- I healed faster than Grace and it was really helpful for Grace when I told her that I wanted her to tell me how she was feeling and to communicate with me, otherwise Grace was feeling like there was distance growing between us that might never have been fixed

1. Faith and works
1. How do they work together?
2. Abraham and Sarah
1. God told them they would have a child
2. Both very old--beyond child-bearing years
3. Time passed after God promised them a child
4. Eventually, "gave up" and allowed Hagar into the mixed
5. God's plan all along was to give them a child through the means that He had always intended for children to be born: from within a marriage--between a man and his wife, no outside interference
6. Conclusion
1. Faith _should_ have meant trusting God that now extra-biblical method was going to be needed to accomplish God's own promise
2. Knowing God's plan is children within a marriage and give that Abraham and Sarah were already married, though tough, they should have waited for God to accomplish this with in the confines of their marriage
3. Going at it "according to the flesh" was forcing the promise of God
4. Going at it by faith would have meant
1. God's perfect timing
2. No marital problems
3. No generational problems (Ishmael's people are the Arabs)
3. Paul going to Rome
1. God told him he was going to testify in Rome
2. Even though he was shipwrecked and snake bit him, he knew he would survive and get through all of it (though, I'm sure, nothing felt easy) because he trusted Gods word
3. So, his actions (works) reflected his faith in God's word because he believed God, no matter what happened in the interim.
4. Moreover, he simply made his way to Rome.
1. Would you mistrust your choice of ship once you saw the foolishness of the captain and storm coming, causing a shipwreck?
2. Paul didn't seem to really ask any questions--he just went, finding his way along. The "failures" along the way--the amazing resistance he met with (snakes, shipwrecks, delays)--were not in his thinking in terms of causing him to doubt _his_ decision making--that is, that he "must have done something wrong" because it didn't look like he was getting to Rome any time soon
2. Hell
1. Words used for it?
2. How is it described in the NT and OT?
3. Can I really do it justice in a weeks' worth of study?
3. Book study
1. Hebrews? Have only just started…dont know much yet at all. Seems like Hebrews has been done a lot lately
2. Something in the OT?

# Message 1
New Testament reformation fellowship expound Greek of "do this in remembrance of me" newtestamentfellowship.org
Acts 2:42 taking their meals together, continuing in breaking of bread (amongst other things)
Sense we get is that Lord's Supper in the context of actual meal together, celebrated often.
Changes over history: orthodox forbade the taking of meals together (?) in favor of the eucharist. Restricted taking home provisions, having a meal in church building.
Third counsel of carthage 393 AD and second counsel of orleans, reiterated prohibition on feasting in churches.
Supper turned into a ritual instead of a meal. Supper was always holy and honorable, but not a ritual. It was a meal together, remembering covenant the Lord made for us.
In early church, there was no building—perhaps early believers met in the temple. They met in homes.
"and" (kai) missing from Acts 2:42 between "fellowship" and "breaking of bread". Implication being that fellowship was accomplish by the breaking of bread together.
# Message 2
Topic: practical considerations for "love feasting".
Good point: we don't like to change in church and one of the reasons is that doing so has to admit that were either ignorant of how we ought to do something or we were doing it wrong or with adjustments needed.
## How would a large church do a love feast?
First we need to ask:
- What is an appropriate church size (locally, of course)?
- What are practical intelligent ways to practice this?
Of course, after Peter preaches on Pentecost the church goes from 120 to 3000! In one day, the church grew tremendously. Yet, they seemed to adapt quite well.
Answer is that the ancient church probably never met in groups larger than 60-70 people.

Pros
1. Financial help for education through Maize school district
2. Closer to the chapel
3. Closer to most people who go to the chapel for easy fellowship, etc
4. More opportunities for the boys to grow friendships with Chapel kids
5. A new house with the right features would make it easier for elderly people or people like David and Rachel to stay with us
6. Doing young peoples things at our house when the the boys are that age would be much
7. We could more easily be involved in ministry to the Chapel like mowing at the chapel, helping people move, being involved in pathways, etc.
8. With the right features, a house could have an office for me, and at least two rooms for the boys, especially as they get older and need more space
Cons
1. Moving away from Ava for boys
2. Losing sentimental attachment for the kids
3. Housing prices are very high
4. Interest rates are very high
5. We dont have money saved up to move
6. The work of changing addresses, tax things, etc. for moving to a new state
7. Moving is a hassle!
