who are residing temporarily
in the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

according to his great mercy
has caused us to be born again

into an inheritance
imperishable and
undefiled and
unfading,
reserved in heaven for you
who
are being protected by the power of God
through faith
for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time,

so that the genuineness of your faith,
more valuable than gold
that is passing away, but is tested by fire,
may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
whom,
although you have not seen,
you love;
in whom now you believe,
although you do not see him,
and you rejoice greatly
with joy inexpressible and
full of glory,
obtaining the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets
who
prophesied about the grace meant for you
sought and made careful inquiry, investigating
for what person or
which time
the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating
when he testified beforehand
to the sufferings with reference to Christ and
the glories after these things,
to whom it was revealed
that they were serving not themselves
but you
with reference to the same things
which now have been announced to you
through those who proclaimed the gospel
to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven,
things into which angels desire to look.
Therefore,
when you have prepared your minds for action
by being self-controlled,
put your hope completely in the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
As obedient children,
do not be conformed to the former desires you used to conform to in your ignorance,
but
as the one who called you is holy,
you yourselves be holy in all your conduct, for it is written, “You will be holy, because I am holy.”
And
if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s work,
conduct yourselves with fear during the time of your temporary residence,
because you know that
you were redeemed from your futile way of life inherited from your ancestors
not with perishable things like silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of Christ,
like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb
who was foreknown before the foundation of the world,
but has been revealed in these last times for you
who
through him are believing in God,
who
raised him from the dead and
gave him glory,
so that your faith and hope are in God.
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for sincere brotherly love,
love one another fervently from the heart,
because you have been born again,
not from perishable seed
but imperishable,
through the living and enduring word of God.
For “all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the grass. The grass withers and the flower falls off, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And this is the word that has been proclaimed to you.
Therefore,
ridding yourselves of
all malice and
all deceit and
hypocrisy and
envy and
all slander,
like newborn infants
long for the unadulterated spiritual milk,
so that by it you may grow up to salvation,
if you have tasted that the Lord is kind,
to whom you are drawing near,
a living stone rejected by men
but
chosen and
precious in the sight of God.
And you yourselves, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house
for a holy priesthood,
to offer up spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
For it stands in scripture, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.” Therefore the honor is for you who believe,
but for those who refuse to believe, “The stone that the builders rejected, this one has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,” who stumble because they disobey the word to which also they were consigned.
But you are
a chosen race,
a royal priesthood,
a holy nation,
a people for God’s possession,
so that you
may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you
out of darkness
into his marvelous light,
who
once were not a people,
but now are the people of God,
the ones who were not shown mercy,
but now are shown mercy.
Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and temporary residents to abstain from fleshly desires which wage war against your soul, maintaining your good conduct among the Gentiles, so that in the things in which they slander you as evildoers, by seeing your good deeds they may glorify God on the day of visitation.
Subject yourselves to every human authority for the sake of the Lord, whether to a king as having supreme authority, or to governors as those sent out by him for the punishment of those who do evil and the praise of those who do good. For the will of God is as follows: by doing good to silence the ignorance of foolish people.
Live as free persons, and not using your freedom as a covering for evil, but as slaves of God. Honor all people, love the community of believers, fear God, honor the king.
Domestic slaves, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unjust. For this finds favor, if because of consciousness of God someone endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this finds favor with God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his footsteps, who did not commit sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth, who when he was reviled, did not revile in return; when suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly, who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we may die to sins and live to righteousness, by whose wounds you were healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but you have turned back now to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
In the same way, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some are disobedient to the word, they may be won over without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful, pure conduct. Let your adornment not be the external kind, braiding hair and putting on gold jewelry or putting on fine clothing, but the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is highly valuable in the sight of God. For in the same way formerly the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves by being subject to their own husbands, like Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you have become when you do good and are not frightened with respect to any terror.
Husbands, in the same way live with your wives knowledgeably, as with the weaker female vessel, showing them honor as fellow heirs also of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
And finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, showing mutual affection, compassionate, humble, not repaying evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the other hand blessing others, because for this reason you were called, so that you could inherit a blessing. For “The one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips must not speak deceit. And he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
And who is the one who will harm you if you are a zealous adherent for what is good? But even if you might suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not be afraid of their intimidation or be disturbed, but set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts, always ready to make a defense to anyone who asks you for an accounting concerning the hope that is in you. But do so with courtesy and respect, having a good conscience, so that in the things in which you are slandered, the ones who malign your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.
For it is better to suffer for doing good, if God wills it, than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, in order that he could bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, who were formerly disobedient, when the patience of God waited in the days of Noah, while an ark was being constructed, in which a few—that is, eight souls—were rescued through water. And also, corresponding to this, baptism now saves you, not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, with angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him. Therefore, because Christ suffered in the flesh, you also equip yourselves with the same way of thinking, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for the will of God. For the time that has passed was sufficient to do what the Gentiles desire to do, having lived in licentiousness, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries, with respect to which they are surprised when you do not run with them into the same flood of dissipation, and so they revile you. They will give an account to the one who is ready to judge the living and the dead. Because for this reason also the gospel was preached to those who are dead, so that they were judged by human standards in the flesh, but they may live in the spirit by God’s standards. Now the end of all things draws near. Therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for your prayers. Above all, keep your love for one another constant, because love covers a large number of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Just as each one has received a gift, use it for serving one another, as good stewards of the varied grace of God. If anyone speaks, let it be as the oracles of God; if anyone serves, let it be as by the strength that God provides, so that in all things God will be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, when it takes place to test you, as if something strange were happening to you. But to the degree that you share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, so that also at the revelation of his glory you may rejoice and be glad. If you are reviled on account of the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. By all means do not let anyone of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. But if someone suffers as a Christian, he must not be ashamed, but must glorify God with this name. For it is the time for the judgment to begin out from the household of God. But if it begins out from us first, what will be the outcome for those who are disobedient to the gospel of God? And if the righteous are saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? So then also those who suffer according to the will of God must entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good. Therefore I, your fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a sharer of the glory that is going to be revealed, exhort the elders among you: shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not by compulsion but willingly, in accordance with God, and not greedily but eagerly, and not as lording it over those under your care, but being examples for the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. In the same way, younger men, be subject to the elders, and all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the right time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares for you. Be sober; be on the alert. Your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, because you know the same kinds of sufferings are being accomplished by your community of believers in the world. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered for a short time, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen. God's true grace is revealed in salvation, submission, suffering and humility.
1. **Greeting (1:1-2)**

2. **True grace revealed in salvation (1:3-2:10)**
1. The role of the godhead (1:3-12)
1. The Father secures our salvation (1:3-5)_3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time._
2. The Son validates our salvation (1:6-9)_6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls._
3. The Spirit reveals our salvation (1:10-12)
_10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look._
2. The response of the believer (1:13-2:10)
1. We set our hope on the grace (1:13)_13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ._
2. We pursue holiness (1:14-16)_14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”_
3. We conduct ourselves with fear (1:17-21)

5. We love one another earnestly (1:22-2:1)
_22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for_

7. We long to grow (2:2-3)_2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good._
3. The result of the roles fulfilled: a spiritual house (2:4-8)
_4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture:_
_“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,_
_a cornerstone chosen and precious,_
_and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”_
_7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,_
_“The stone that the builders rejected_

_They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do._
5. The true grace of God revealed in salvation: we work together to accomplish God's purpose (2:9-10)
_9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy._
3. **Transition: the reality of how God has situated us (2:11-12)******How do we live as the household of God among a world of unbelievers? How can we succeed? We can be strengthened by seeing the reality of how God has situated us. He's given us a source of strong relationships (the church) to encourage one another. He's given us the correct view of our residence here on earth--we have a citizenship in heaven, though we are to live here and thrive here. He's revealed to us our true enemy: our own weak flesh, the primary culprit when we sin. He's turned the tables so that our power is to influence the world around us by doing good, not the other way around. These verses seem to serve as a bridge between what Peter has said and what he is about to say. Knowing what God has done for us and who we are as believers, now he will address, in depth, two major categories of struggle for believers when living in the world: submission and suffering.
1. Our relationships (loving, close)_11 Beloved, I urge you_
2. Our residence (not belonging, but living)_as sojourners and exiles_
3. Our enemy (primarily our own flesh)_to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul._
4. Our influence (we influence the world, the world shouldn't influence us)_12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation._
4. **True grace revealed in submission (2:13-3:12)**
1. Submission as citizens (2:13-17)_13 Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor._
2. Submission as servants (2:18-25)_18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls._
3. Submission as married ones (3:1-7)
1. As wives (3:1-6)_3 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening._
2. As husbands (3:7)_7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered._
4. Submission to each other (3:8-12)
_8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 10 For_
_“Whoever desires to love life_
_and see good days,_
_let him keep his tongue from evil_
_and his lips from speaking deceit;_
_11  let him turn away from evil and do good;_
_let him seek peace and pursue it._
_12  For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,_

5. **True grace revealed in suffering (3:13-4:19)**
1. Suffer for good, not evil (3:13-22)
_13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil._
_18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him._
3. Purpose to suffer (4:1-11)
_4 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does._
_7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen._
5. Summary (4:12-19)
1. Expect trials, it is testing (4:12)_12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you._
2. Rejoice in suffering (4:13)_13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed._
3. If you are reviled, you are blessed (4:14)_14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you._
4. Suffer as a Christian, not an evil doer (4:15-16)_15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name._
5. Judgement is coming (4:17-18)
_17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And_
_“If the righteous is scarcely saved,_
_what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”_
6. Trust your faithful creator (4:19)_19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good._
6. **True grace revealed in humility (5:1-11)**
1. As elders (5:1-4)_5 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory._
2. As young men (5:5)_5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”_
3. As anyone (5:6-11)_6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen._
7. **Farewell (5:12-14)**
_12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love._
